The reality, backed by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and WHO indoor air quality guidelines, is that 24°C is the optimal AC temperature for Dubai summer — for comfort, for health, and for your DEWA bill.
In this article, I'll explain why 24°C is the sweet spot, how much you save by raising your thermostat just 2 degrees, and the role humidity plays in how cool your room actually 'feels'. The Sweet Spot: 24°C for Dubai Summer
ASHRAE Standard 55 recommends an indoor operative temperature of 23–26°C for naturally ventilated buildings in hot climates, with relative humidity kept below 60%. The World Health Organization's indoor air quality guidelines echo this, noting that temperatures below 23°C for prolonged periods can cause respiratory irritation, dry skin, and increased susceptibility to infection — especially in air-conditioned environments where humidity is already low.
For Dubai's summer climate (40–48°C outdoor, 50–70% outdoor humidity), 24°C at 50% indoor humidity produces a 'feels-like' temperature of about 25°C — comfortable for sedentary activity in light clothing. Dropping the thermostat to 22°C only brings the feels-like down to about 22°C, but costs you 12% more on AC electricity (more on this below).

Set your AC to 24°C for living areas during the day, 23°C for bedrooms at night. Use the AC's 'dry' or 'auto' mode if humidity is high — this dehumidifies without overcooling, and is often more comfortable than dropping the temperature.
Why Every Degree Matters — The 6% Rule
DEWA's own energy efficiency guidance, supported by data from the International Energy Agency, estimates that for every 1°C you lower your AC thermostat below 24°C, your AC's energy consumption increases by approximately 6%. This is because the compressor has to work harder to maintain a larger temperature differential between inside and outside — and in Dubai summer, that differential is already extreme.
Here's what that looks like in real money for a typical 2-bedroom Dubai apartment running two 1.5-ton split ACs:
- Setting AC to 26°C: baseline (lowest consumption)
- Setting AC to 24°C: +12% AC consumption (≈ AED 80/month extra)
- Setting AC to 22°C: +24% AC consumption (≈ AED 160/month extra)
- Setting AC to 20°C: +36% AC consumption (≈ AED 240/month extra)
- Setting AC to 18°C: +48% AC consumption — and the AC may never reach setpoint, running 24/7
These numbers assume your AC is well-maintained. A dirty, undercharged, or poorly maintained AC has to work even harder per degree of cooling — so the savings from raising your thermostat are even bigger on a poorly-maintained system. Which is, of course, the opposite of what most Dubai residents do.
Why Humidity Matters More Than Temperature
Dubai's coastal climate means humidity is the hidden driver of comfort. At 24°C and 40% relative humidity, you feel cool and dry. At 24°C and 70% relative humidity, you feel sticky and uncomfortable — and most people respond by dropping the thermostat to 21°C, which wastes electricity without fixing the actual problem.
A well-maintained AC dehumidifies as it cools — the evaporator coil condenses moisture from the air, which drains out through the condensate line. But a frozen coil, a clogged drain, or an oversized AC that short-cycles won't dehumidify effectively. If your AC is set to 24°C but the room still feels muggy, the issue isn't the temperature — it's the humidity, and the fix is maintenance, not colder air.
Signs your AC isn't dehumidifying properly
- Room feels clammy even at 22°C
- Condensation on windows and metal surfaces
- Musty smell from the indoor unit
- Visible mould around AC vents or on curtains
- AC runs in short bursts (5–10 minutes) then switches off — this is short-cycling

Best AC Temperature for Different Rooms & Times
Not every room needs the same temperature. Here's the optimal AC setting for each room in a Dubai home:
Living room — 24°C during the day
You're typically active, in light clothing, and there may be solar gain through windows. 24°C is comfortable and efficient. Drop to 23°C only when outdoor temps exceed 44°C, and use blackout curtains to reduce solar load.
Bedroom — 23°C at night
Sleeping bodies generate less heat, but you're under covers and motionless. 23°C is the optimal sleep temperature per the National Sleep Foundation. Use the AC's sleep mode, which gradually raises the temperature by 1–2°C over the night as your body temperature drops.
Kitchen — 25°C with extractor fan on
Cooking adds 2–4 kW of heat to the room. Don't try to fight it with the AC — run the extractor fan, accept a slightly warmer kitchen, and let the AC recover after cooking. Setting the AC to 20°C while cooking just wastes electricity and overworks the compressor.
Empty rooms — 27°C or off
If a room is unoccupied for 4+ hours, raise the AC to 27°C. This 'setback' temperature is warm enough to prevent mould growth and protect electronics, but uses 60%+ less energy than maintaining 24°C in an empty room.
Should You Turn Off the AC When You Leave Home?
This is one of the most common questions we get. The answer depends on how long you'll be out:
- Out for under 2 hours: leave the AC on at 26°C. The energy to cool a hot room back down exceeds the savings.
- Out for 2–6 hours: set the AC to 27°C. This is the sweet spot — minimal energy use, easy recovery.
- Out for 6+ hours (e.g. work day): turn the AC off, but use a timer to start cooling 30 minutes before you return.
- Travelling for days: turn the AC off at the breaker, but leave doors open for airflow to prevent mould.
